SKWAT Tokyo: Your Ultimate Guide to Art Books, Vinyl Records, and Photography in Kameari

At the Tokyo Art Book Fair, a serendipitous encounter at the Further Reading Press stand led to an exciting discovery. While exploring their Indonesian publications with Naya, who was already familiar with their work through social media, we had an enlightening conversation with Almer from Further Reading Press. His enthusiastic recommendation of SKWAT, a distinctive bookshop in Tokyo's Kameari area, set the stage for what would become a remarkable visit.

As an avid collector of both vinyl records and photo books alongside my photography hobby, I've discovered something powerful about physical media in our digital age. While many see physical items becoming obsolete, I've found that vinyl records and photo books offer an intentional way to engage with art. The tactile experience of placing a record on a turntable or turning the pages of a photo book creates a focused, meaningful connection that stands in stark contrast to the endless scroll of digital content. SKWAT, with its carefully curated selection of vinyl records and photo books, naturally emerged as my ideal destination - a true haven for collectors who value these tangible forms of art.

Where to Find SKWAT: A Unique Warehouse Experience

Situated in Nishi Kameari, SKWAT transforms the concept of a traditional bookstore by inviting visitors into its distinctive storage warehouse space. The venue houses an exceptional collection of Art Books, complemented by outstanding Architecture and Photography selections. The industrial aesthetic creates a bold, authentic atmosphere that sets it apart from conventional bookstores, making every visit a unique experience.

What Makes SKWAT Special: Diverse Art Book Collection

What sets SKWAT/twelve books apart is their meticulously curated selection of art books, ranging from contemporary photography to graphic design, illustration, and architecture. The store specializes in both Japanese and international publications, making it a unique destination for discovering rare and limited-edition art books.

My Personal Experience

Following my recent visit to the Alec Soth exhibition at the Tokyo Photography Museum, I was particularly interested in acquiring his seminal work, "Sleeping By Mississippi." The photographs displayed in the museum's gallery were profoundly moving, offering intimate glimpses into the lives and stories of the individuals he encountered during his photographic journey.

To my delight, I discovered the exact book I was looking for at SKWAT, perched on a rack at the top level of the building, accessible by industrial-style stairs. The space also housed remarkable photo books by Ed Templeton and Daido Moriyama. I purchased "Sleeping By Mississippi" along with a Charlie Mingus jazz record and, to our surprise, we even found Indonesian records featuring Elvi Sukaesih and Keroncong genre music.

Why You Should Visit SKWAT

If you're searching for a unique Tokyo art experience, SKWAT is an essential stop. Beyond being a bookstore, it's a cultural hub where art, photography, and music intersect, offering a carefully curated selection that will inspire any creative enthusiast.
